How Much Gold Is on Earth?

There's an extraordinary amount of gold on Earth, but most of it is impossible to reach because it's buried deep inside the planet.

From ancient cosmic events to the jewellery box, gold has travelled an extraordinary journey.

A Precious Metal Born in the Cosmos

The gold on Earth did not originate here. Gold atoms were created in extreme cosmic events before becoming part of the material from which our planet formed.

Gold is rare, beautiful and almost unimaginably old. The gold in jewellery was forged by extraordinary events in the universe long before Earth existed.

That makes every gold ring, chain or piece of body jewellery part of a story that began billions of years before human beings existed.

Imagine All the Gold as One Giant Cube

All the gold humans have mined would fit into a surprisingly small space.

Estimates of how much gold humanity has mined change as new gold is produced and historical figures are revised. But the remarkable point remains the same: because gold is extremely dense, all the above-ground gold in the world could be gathered into a cube only a little over 20 metres along each side.

That sounds astonishingly small when you think about centuries of gold coins, jewellery, investment bars and national reserves spread around the world.

Where Does All That Gold Go?

A large share of the world's above-ground gold has been made into jewellery. Significant quantities are also held as investment bars and coins and in central-bank reserves, while smaller amounts are used in technology and industry.

The exact proportions change over time, but jewellery remains one of the most visible ways humans have treasured gold throughout history.

Is There Still Gold Left in the Ground?

Yes. Gold is still being discovered and mined around the world. Known economically recoverable reserves are only part of the story because exploration, technology, costs and the gold price can all change what is practical to mine.

There is also vastly more gold deep inside Earth than we could ever reach. During the planet's early history, much of its gold moved towards the core. The gold available in Earth's crust is therefore only a tiny fraction of the planet's total.

Gold in Space

Gold exists beyond Earth too. The heavy elements that eventually became part of planets, asteroids and everything around us were produced by violent events in the universe.

Asteroid mining is often discussed as a possible future source of valuable materials, although bringing precious metals back from space on a commercial scale remains a very different proposition from imagining it.

Still, the thought is irresistible: perhaps one day someone really will wear jewellery made from material mined beyond Earth.

Gold has a cosmic story — and perhaps one day jewellery could even contain material mined in space.

Why Gold's Rarity Matters for Jewellery

Part of gold's fascination comes from the combination of rarity, beauty and durability. It does not tarnish in the way many other metals do, and humans have valued its warm colour for thousands of years.

At Hidden Delites, we make gold-plated body jewellery. All our designs start off with silver base then they are plated in 24ct gold. Stunning.

Did you Know Even the Human Body Contains Traces of Gold?

Gold can occur in the human body in extremely tiny trace quantities. It is one of many elements that can enter our bodies through the environment, food and water.

The amount is minuscule, but it is another lovely reminder that the elements around us, inside us and in our jewellery all belong to the same physical universe.

From Stardust to Jewellery

Perhaps that is what makes gold so fascinating. A piece of gold jewellery can be small enough to sit in the palm of your hand, yet the atoms within it have a history stretching back to events that happened before our planet existed.

From the cosmos to Earth, and eventually to something we choose to wear.

Questions & Answers

How much gold has humanity mined?

Estimates change as more gold is mined and historical figures are revised, but the total above-ground supply is only a few hundred thousand metric tonnes — remarkably little for a metal valued by civilisations for thousands of years.

Would all the world's gold really fit into one cube?

Yes. Because gold is exceptionally dense, estimates of the world's above-ground gold translate into a cube only a little over 20 metres on each side.

Is there more gold inside Earth?

Yes. Most of Earth's gold is believed to be deep within the planet, including the core, where it is inaccessible to mining.

Did gold come from stars?

Gold was created through extreme astrophysical processes before Earth formed. Those gold atoms later became incorporated into the material that formed our planet.

Could we mine gold from asteroids?

Asteroids can contain valuable metals and space mining is an area of continuing interest, but large-scale commercial asteroid mining remains a future possibility rather than an ordinary source of gold today.

What Do You Think?

Does it surprise you that all the gold humanity has mined could fit into such a small space? And would you wear jewellery made from gold mined in space one day? Your comments, feedback and ideas are always welcome.
